A Puzzle’s START Page
From a puzzle’s START page, you can launch new 1-Player and 2-Player games, as well as resume your saved,
in-progress 1-Player puzzles, and view your list of
in-progress 2-Player games. Each START page displays the 5
for the puzzle type, plus a News panel that reports the latest member scores and achievements for that puzzle.
To reach a puzzle’s START page, click on its button at
All Puzzles or select it by name from the Puzzles dropdown menu in the main navigation bar.
1-Player: Starting a New Puzzle
Launch a new 1-Player puzzle from that puzzle type’s
START page. Make sure that “New Puzzle” or “New 1-Player” is highlighted and then choose the difficulty level you wish to solve (range of difficulty will vary by puzzle type). Click the START! button and a new puzzle will launch.
1-Player: Saving a Puzzle
Most 1-Player puzzles can be saved in progress and returned to at your convenience, as long as you are solving in unscored
Casual Mode.
Competitive Mode (scored) solving cannot be saved in progress.
All 1-Player puzzles launch automatically in
Competitive Mode, but you can switch to
Casual Mode at any time once you begin. To do so, simply turn off the timer or the scoring, or click Save or
Casual Mode. Once you’re in Casual Mode, you may save at any time. Your saved puzzles will be stored in your
1-Player: In-Progress list on the puzzle’s
START page.
1-Player: In-Progress List
Resume your saved puzzles from the
START page’s In Progress: 1-Player list. Once you’ve saved a puzzle, it will only be removed from list if you finish it, manually remove it using the discard option from the list, or quit out of a play session without resaving it.
Competitive Mode
All 1-Player puzzles launch in Competitive Mode. Puzzles completed in Competitive Mode are scored, and these scores are awarded as
PuzzlePoints that are eligible for the leaderboards. If you prefer to turn scoring off, you can do so by switching to
Casual Mode, but you may not switch from
Casual Mode back to Competitive Mode during a given solve.
If you enjoy solving in Competitive Mode, but would rather not have your scores shared with the community and applied to the leaderboards, simply set that privacy preference in your Preferences page, which is accessible via the
Preferences link in the
member toolbar.
Casual Mode
Casual Mode is designed for the player who prefers no time or scoring pressure. Completed Casual Mode puzzles are not scored and are not eligible for the leaderboards, but they do count toward your lifetime completion total for that puzzle type (this statistic is listed in your profile). Casual Mode games can also be
saved and returned to at your convenience, as many times as you wish.
All new puzzles launch automatically in
Competitive Mode, but you can switch to
Casual Mode at any time once you begin. To do so, simply turn off the timer or the scoring, or click SAVE or
Casual Mode. Note that certain games, such as Crossword Raiders, do not have a Casual Mode option.
2-Player: How It Works
All PuzzleNation 2-Player games employ turn-based gameplay. This means that you and your opponent do not have to be online at the same time to take your individual turns, and you can take as much time to complete a game together as you like—minutes, hours, days or weeks. You can also have as many games in progress simultaneously, with as many different opponents, as you wish.
You must first be
buddies with a given member before you can challenge each other to 2-Player games. The player who issues a challenge takes the first turn. When that turn is complete, the opponent receives a notification in the
Mail inbox and will also see the challenge posted in the Received Challenges page, which is accessible via the
Challenges link in the
member toolbar. After each turn of the game is complete, the opposing player receives a notification that it’s now his or her turn. When the game is over, notifications are sent to both players. The completed game is viewable by both players for 14 days after it ends, and can be opened via the link provided in the game-over notification.
When it’s not your turn in a 2-Player game, some game types will still allow you to make notes or to otherwise prepare for your next turn. For example, in StarSpell, you can save words to your Launch Pad when it’s not your turn. In GuessWorks or Tanglewords, you can jot down reminders to yourself on the notepad. These actions are saved when you Exit the game.
Both the winner and the loser of any 2-Player game receive their final scores as
PuzzlePoints.
2-Player: Starting a New Game
All game challenges are issued from a game’s
START page. Select “New 2-Player” and your buddy list will appear. (You must first be
buddies with another member before you can challenge each other to 2-Player games.) Choose the buddy you wish to challenge. If the game type has a range of difficulty levels, choose one. Click START! and the game will launch. As the challenger, you will take the first turn.
2-Player: Nudge/Cancel a Challenge
Before your challenge is accepted or declined by your opponent, it will be listed in the Sent Challenges page, which is accessible via the
Challenges link in the
member toolbar. Once your opponent has accepted or declined the challenge, the listing will disappear from your Sent Challenges. Until then, you may nudge your opponent with a reminder that the challenge is pending (he or she will receive the nudge in the Mail inbox), or cancel the challenge altogether, from the Sent Challenges page.
2-Player: Accept/Decline a Challenge
You will receive notification of a challenge in your
Mail inbox and also on your Received Challenges page, which is accessible via the
Challenges link in the
member toolbar. From the Received Challenges page, you can accept or decline each challenge. Accepting will immediately launch a given game so that you can take your first turn.
2-Player: In-Progress List
The START page of every 2-Player game has an In Progress: 2-Player list. Your active games can be found and resumed from this list. It is also noted here whose turn it is in the game, or if your opponent is
idle and therefore you are eligible to
claim the win.
2-Player: Game Notifications
During a game, various automatic notifications are sent to each player’s Mail inbox, including when a challenge has been issued, when it has been accepted or declined, when it’s the player’s turn, and when the game is over. Most of these notifications contain a shortcut link that can be clicked to open the active game.
Copies of these notifications are automatically sent to the e-mail address associated with your account. In these copies, the shortcut link to the active game will only work if you are already logged in to the site. If you prefer not to receive these copies, simply set that preference in your E-mail Notify page, which is accessible via the
Mail link in the
member toolbar.
2-Player: Resign
Only the player who is behind in points may resign during a 2-Player game. The player who resigns will still receive his or her current score as
PuzzlePoints, but the opponent is awarded the win. The Resign option becomes available after the challenger’s first turn, and can be found among the upper-right controls on the game screen.
2-Player: Claim the Win
If either player in a game waits longer than 14 days to begin a turn, he or she is “idle” and the opposing player is eligible to claim the win for the game. When this condition exists, the eligible player will see a notice that the opponent is idle in the
In Progress: 2-Player listing for that game. Upon launching the game, the eligible player will be given the opportunity to claim the win against the idle player. The eligible player can also choose not to exercise this option, and to wait more than 14 days for the idle player to take his or her turn.
Any game left idle by both players for over 60 days will be automatically removed from both players’ in-progress lists.
PuzzlePoints
Your final score for every 1-Player puzzle completed in
Competitive Mode, and every 2-Player game (whether you win or lose), is awarded to you as PuzzlePoints. PuzzlePoints are cumulative for each specific game type, and are applied to the
Top Solvers leaderboards.
If you would prefer not to have your scores shared with the community and applied to the leaderboards, simply set that privacy preference in your Preferences page, which is accessible via the
Preferences link in the
member toolbar.
Your current PuzzlePoints for all games, both for the current leaderboard period and lifetime, will show in your profile (accessible via the
My Profile link in the
member toolbar). If you have opted not to share your scores with the community, they will be visible only to you.
Top Solvers: 1-Player
For each 1-Player puzzle type, the Top Solvers are the 10 members with the most
PuzzlePoints for the current leaderboard period, which resets on the first of each month. You can access the Top Solvers: 1-Player leaderboards from the Community dropdown menu in the main navigation bar.
At the bottom of each puzzle’s Top Solvers panel, there is a link to the full leaderboard for that puzzle type—click this to see how the entire membership is ranked. If you wish, you can filter the full leaderboard by using the Me + Buddies link to show only you and your buddies, rather than the entire community.
If you would prefer not to have your scores shared with the community and applied to the leaderboards, simply set that privacy preference in your Preferences page, which is accessible via the
Preferences link in the
member toolbar.
Top Solvers: 2-Player
For each 2-Player game type, the Top Solvers are the 10 members with the most
PuzzlePoints for the current leaderboard period, which resets quarterly (on the 1st of January, April, July, and October). You can access the Top Solvers: 2-Player leaderboards from the Community dropdown menu in the main navigation bar.
At the bottom of each game’s Top Solvers panel, there is a link to the full leaderboard for that game type—click this to see how the entire membership is ranked.
Top Scores
Beneath the gameplay area of any 1-Player or 2-Player game, you’ll see a Top Scores panel. This shows the 5 members who have earned the highest individual scores of all time on that particular instance of the puzzle or game. The panel automatically draws its ranking from the entire community, but you can filter it to show just the top 5 among your own buddies by using the Buddies link. If your own final score qualifies, you’ll find yourself in this listing once the game is complete (unless you have opted not to share your scores in your
preferences).
News of the Nation
News of the Nation is an ongoing newsfeed of community solving activity. In close to real time, it reports top scores for individual 1-Player puzzles (a top score is any score within the top 10), the winners of 2-Player games, and various milestone achievements for members, such as hitting or moving up within the Top Solvers listings.
News of the Nation automatically draws its news from the entire community, but can be filtered using the Me + Buddies link to show just you and your buddies. It can also be filtered by game type.
You’ll find that news items often contain helpful shortcut links. For example, if a buddy of yours is in the newsfeed for achieving a top-10 score, that news item will also display a
Solve the same puzzle! link that you can use to launch exactly the same puzzle. If you have already solved that particular puzzle when your buddy’s news item hits the newsfeed, your final score will be displayed next to your buddy’s, for comparison.
If you would rather not have your scores or achievements included in News of the Nation, set that privacy preference in your Preferences page, which is accessible via the
Preferences link in the
member toolbar.
Find a Member/Advanced Search
To find another member by username, type all or part of the username into the Find A Member window in the right corner of the main navigation bar. Click GO and you’ll get a list of possible matches. To do a more general search—for instance, to find people who share common interests with you, or who like to be challenged to certain 2-Player games—click on the Advanced Search link next to the Find A Member window. On the Advanced Search page, you can customize the search to suit your needs. Once the search results appear, you can click on any username in the listing to be taken to that member’s profile.
Sending Buddy Requests
To send a buddy request to another member, go to that member’s profile page. You can do this by clicking on the member’s username anywhere that it appears (e.g., search results, newsfeed items, leaderboards, forum posts). In the top right corner of the member’s profile, you’ll see an Add As Buddy button. Use this to send a request.
Member Toolbar
Once you are logged in, the member toolbar appears in the upper-right corner of the site. This is where you’ll access the following personalized features:
My Account,
My Profile,
Preferences,
Mail,
Buddies, and
Challenges. When you log out of the site, you will do so from the member toolbar.
My Account
Your primary account information is available via the My Account link in the
member toolbar. Here you may change the credit card and e-mail address associated with your account, your account password, or your local time zone. To customize your profile, open the Edit Profile page, fill in as much of the information as you wish, and save your changes. After you save your changes, you can see how your profile will appear to the community by switching to the View Profile page.
Your profile automatically includes your buddy list, your PuzzlePoints for both the current leaderboard period and your lifetime totals, the most recent activity posted by you and your buddies, and the forum discussions that you are participating in.
If you prefer to share your profile with only your buddies or to keep it entirely private, select the desired privacy setting in your Preferences page, which is accessible via the
Preferences link in the
member toolbar.

Notifications regarding your account status are sent only to the e-mail address associated with your account, and will not appear in your PuzzleNation inbox.
Buddies
Your list of buddies is accessible via the Buddies link in the
member toolbar. Click on any buddy listed to go to that person’s profile. The Pending page shows any pending buddy requests you have sent to other members, as well as any pending buddy requests you have received. You can accept or decline received requests from the Pending page. Until they are accepted or declined, you can cancel sent buddy requests from the Pending page.

Until it is accepted or declined, you may nudge your opponent with a reminder that the challenge is pending (he or she will receive the nudge in the
Mail inbox), or cancel the challenge altogether, from the Sent Challenges page.
